Effects of climate change
At Crown Coaches, we believe the repercussions of climate change present an immediate and tangible threat to the long term safety and wellbeing of our staff, clients, passengers, and the broader community. Emissions like carbon, methane, hydrofluorocarbons, and tropospheric ozone are casting detrimental effects on air quality, food sources, water reservoirs, and the global economic landscape. These impacts reverberate both in a direct manner, impacting public health, agriculture, and ecosystems, and indirectly, as they exacerbate the overarching challenges posed by climate change.
Why are we taking action against climate change?
The transport industry is a significant contributor to global warming, responsible for approximately 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of these emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel in commercial vehicles.
Crown Coaches is committed to reducing the emissions of our own company’s operations through carbon offset diesel buses and supporting the development of lower carbon and renewable energies as part of the wider energy transition. We recognise the evolution to net zero is a journey and will require a mix of short, medium and long term solutions to achieve our decarbonisation ambitions of reaching net zero by 2035.
How will we take action against climate change?
Under the banner of “Our Commitment to Climate Action,” Crown Coaches is proactively exploring and committing resources to an array of impactful solutions aimed at reducing our carbon footprint. One pivotal step in our transition strategy is the procurement of Opt-in Carbon Neutral Diesel through a strategic collaboration with Viva Energy. This diesel variant holds certification from Climate Active, an esteemed organisation fostering a collaborative alliance between the Australian Government and businesses, with the shared goal of driving voluntary initiatives that mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on our environment.
At the core of this partnership, Viva Energy undertakes the procurement and retirement of carbon offsets derived from diverse Australian projects meeting the stringent criteria set by the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard. This strategy effectively offsets the emissions stemming from our diesel consumption. We have selected to utilise high quality Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU’s) which are independently audited and verified to ensure the projects deliver genuine emission reductions.
Benefits to local communities
Fostering an environment that supports a richer tapestry of flora and fauna plays a pivotal role in the preservation and thriving of local ecosystems.
AND SOCIAL BENEFITS
Positive outcomes for surrounding communities through employment for local people, health and education, energy access and wellbeing.
Income generated from offset projects feeds back into host communities, nurturing local growth.
The benefits of carbon offsets
By sourcing Carbon Neutral Diesel through Viva Energy, Crown Coaches supports diverse Australian carbon abatement projects. These projects utilise carbon credits from approved Australian project methodologies including reforestation, vegetation, agriculture, and savannah burning. For instance, the West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (WALFA) Project* champions indigenous fire management, bringing social, cultural, and environmental benefits. Purchasing WALFA credits aids First Nations people, preserves biodiversity, knowledge, languages, and custodians’ wellbeing, while cutting emissions by 3.9 million kilograms in year one.
